At the recently concluded Woman’s Wear Daily Beauty CEO Summit, supermodel, supermom, superwoman Iman spoke of her struggles to get her cosmetics brand into major retail outlets in America, the still stunning CEO of IMAN Cosmetics lamented the lack of enthusiasm that many mainstream stores had for her brand and their attemps to relegate her to the back of the store.
“It was a no-go. They wanted me to be placed at the back, which they considered, like it is, for the ethnic section, which I was totally against it for no other reason but ’cause also I never considered myself an ethnic brand.“
Iman was having none of it and refused to place her brand in stores that would relegate her product to the back, Iman also says that she was told that
“Last year, I decided to create a liquid foundation, which I have been told numerous times by the retailers, “Oh, black women don’t buy liquid foundation,” right?“
I am not going to lie, I nearly choked on a piece of apple when I read that, how would those folk even know when we can’t even regularly find a decent foundation for anyone darker than Halle Berry…until IMAN, MAC and BlackUp came to town. Iman also noted that she wanted her brand to be accessible to women of colour of all demographics not just the ones who had access to the major department stores in major US cities.
“I have customers from all over the world that look for the products, but I also have customers in the U.S. that can’t find the product in a store near them.“
