Washing your extensions

By now, due to my FB status, many of you know that my giant ‘fro is created by extensions. Many of you have asked how I achieve the look and some have even asked how I wash it and more curiously IF I wash it. Yes, I wash my hair and I wash it often, I have seborrheic dermatitis which is exacerbated by either stress of the scalp i.e the pulling that can result from tight cornrows or by a dirty scalp. I am a little neurotic about having clean hair and a clean scalp. Here are my tips and tricks for washing this type of extension and keeping the scalp clean.

First I twist the hair into large two strand twists along the cornrows so that the scalp is visible then I apply my Ketaconozole shampoo to the scalp avoiding the synthetic hair as much as possible. Add a little water and massage the lather onto the scalp, let sit for ten minutes. In the shower stand under the water without rubbing and let the shampoo rinse clear.

Then I apply my Herbal Essences moisturising shampoo to the scalp and any visible human hair. This isn’t for cleansing purposes as you have already washed your hair and you can use whatever you like but I just use it because I like the smell. Rinse again without massaging the synthetic hair —it will tangle if you rub it— and then apply your favourite conditioner (a leave-in preferably) Shake head to get most of the water out and allow to air dry, clip straight ends if necessary—this is almost always necessary as synthetic hair will stretch at the ends when twisted— and apply hair oil to the scalp. Untwist and shake, air dry and fluff hair.
